who we are.

storytelling is fundamental to the search for meaning

Playback Theatre is an original form of improvisational theatre where an audience member’s personal story is immediately ‘played back’ onstage by the ensemble group of actors and musician, offering drama, creativity, humour and insight.

The ensemble is part of a world-wide network of independent Playback Theatre Companies, first created in 1975 by Jonathan Fox in New York State.  Playback Theatre Sydney was founded in the early 1980’s and is proud to be one of the longest continually operating Playback companies in the world.

Playback Theatre Sydney works in corporate and community organisations, in training and development programs, at schools and youth forums, at celebrations, awards and special events throughout NSW.  They also have regular public performances in Sydney’s Inner West.

Playback Theatre Sydney has worked with hundreds of groups in many contexts to entertain audiences, highlight experiences, achieve learning outcomes, honour personal stories, celebrate achievements, raise awareness of topics, socialise issues and connect audience members.  The company of actors, facilitators, musicians and educators create unique performances targeting real issues and particular themes.

“We in Playback Theatre embrace the unfolding of life and the inherent spontaneity of people and communities within their cultural, social and political contexts.  We recognise the universal longing for affirmation and for connection with others.  The spontaneous enactment of personal experience in Playback Theatre builds connection between people by honouring the dignity, drama and universality of their stories” – from the International Playback Community’s Vision Statement
